Daughters of the Sea (Little Mermaid theory part 2/3)
Glub glub, my underwater explorers!
|
In our last adventure, we delved into the depths of Disney’s adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Andersen, uncovering the tantalizing tale of Triton’s daughters and the mysterious origins of their lineage.
I dared to challenge the story told by Disney, suggesting that perhaps not all of Triton’s daughters shared the same mermaid mother, Queen Athena. My exploration unearthed a trove of complexities, mirroring the tangled webs of the sea, as I scrutinized Triton’s familial ties with my critical eye.

But fear not, my intrepid readers, this sea-riously hilarious journey has only just begun!

Seven Daughters, Seven Seas
|
Attina / Mala (Bering Sea / Chaine Sea)
Attina, once the flame-haired matriarch of the Bering Sea, exuded an enchanting aura with her vibrant orange tail, evoking the mesmerizing hues of a sunset. However, in a daring cultural makeover, Disney thrust Mala into the spotlight, adorning her with an audacious bright pink tail and orange fins. The shift from Attina’s original allure to Mala’s bold portrayal leaves a tinge of nostalgia tinged with reservation, as the iconic spectrum that defined Attina’s presence takes a backseat to this new, more audacious interpretation. |
|
Alana / Indira (Black Sea / Brinedive Sea)
Alana, the epitome of royal elegance in the Black Sea, once flaunted a regal purple tail that whispered of mystery and allure. In Di sney’s quest for cultural relevance, Alana morphed into Indira, sporting a striking yellow tail that diverged from her predecessor’s enigmatic charm. The departure from Alana’s familiar purple tail introduces a sense of nostalgia tinged with reservation, as the transformation eclipses the regal elegance of her animated counterpart. |
|
Adella / Caspia (Mediterranean Sea / Apneic Sea)
Adella, bathed in the tropical hues of the Mediterranean Sea, radiated vibrant vibes with her yellow-green tail and brown hair. However, in pursuit of “Caucasian chic,” Adella’s Mediterranean essence gave way to Caspia in the Apneic Sea, ushering in another supposed cultural upgrade. The departure from the Mediterranean vibe elicits a palpable sense of change and a growing distaste for the alterations made, as the evolving aesthetic choices seem to veer away from the allure of the animated mermaid daughter. |
|
Aquata / Tamika (Coral Sea / Fracus Sea)
Aquata, the serene middle sister of the Coral Sea, harmonized with the ocean’s tones in grounded elegance with her cool blue tail and brown hair. Tamika emerged onto the live-action scene with a dark blue tail and a distinctive black afro, a stark contrast to Aquata’s original depiction. The conspicuous shift in skin tone raises questions about the underlying motivations behind such changes, challenging the established visual continuity of Triton’s daughters. |
|
Arista / Karina (White Sea / Saithe Sea)
Arista, the fiery beauty of the White Sea, once captivated with her sizzling red tail and white-blonde hair. However, the Disney live-action whirlwind redefined her entirely as Karina in the frosty realms of the Saithe Sea, introducing a multi-colored blue tail that diverged from her predecessor’s vibrant allure. The only continuity in this grand metamorphosis seems to be the retention of white-blonde hair, as Karina undergoes a total aesthetic overhaul. |
|
Andrina / Perla (Caribbean Sea / Piton Sea)
Andrina, adorned in the vibrant hues of the Caribbean Sea, resonated with maroon tail and golden-blonde hair, paying homage to her Latin roots. In the live-action translation, Perla emerged with a reddish-pink tail and long black hair, introducing a fiery aesthetic that deviated from Andrina’s golden vibes. Despite the departure, Perla’s fiery elegance still retains an essence of Latin flair, honoring the character’s Caribbean heritage. |
|
Ariel (Red Sea / Carinae Sea)
Lastly, Ariel, the symbol of a fiery free spirit, underwent a significant transformation from her animated glory to the live-action spectacle. Originally characterized by pale skin, a vibrant green tail, and flaming red hair, she embodied Hans Christian Andersen’s vision of the Little Mermaid. However, in the live-action adaptation, Ariel’s essence embraced an African descent, deviating from the source material and causing frustration at the missed opportunity to align with Andersen’s original vision. |

As we plunge deeper into Triton’s aquatic saga, it becomes glaringly obvious that his daughters are essentially a colorful assortment of jelly beans. Seriously, it’s like Triton decided to host a massive underwater bash, and things got a tad out of hand. But hey, who can blame him? Partying with fifty sea-nymphs is bound to stir up some ocean chaos!

|
I mean, seriously, let’s break it down
First off, take a gander at those tails. We’ve got vibrant orange, regal purple, and sizzling red; it’s a tail color rainbow down there. Now, think about it: what kind of genetic soup could churn out such a diverse spectrum? And let’s not even dive into the hair game. White-blonde, brown, red, golden-blonde. Triton’s daughters must’ve hit up every hair salon in the ocean for that variety. (Wait. Do they actually have hair salons down there?)
